1. What do you understand by client-server concept?
A. A software component that services requests from another software component is called a server. The component making the requests is the client.
The idea of client/server programming is to maximize the benefits of the desktop. The client and server can be present on the same computer or on geographically distant computer connected over a network . Some of the benefits of C/s computing are :
Flexibility, scalability and cost savings in terms of resource utilization and centralized control.

2. What is meant by 3-Tier architecture ?
A. 3 Tier architecture is a method of deploying the client/server technology in real –world situations. The 3 tiers are :

• GUI front-end - Takes care of the end-user interaction and validation of input
data
• Business logic layer - It encapsulates the business processing logic for the data
entered by the user or the data to be processed and given as output to the user. It can be implemented as a collection of reusable and upgradable software components .
• Data-processing layer - It takes care of the data processing , storage and
retrieval of the stored data.

3. What are the advantages of 3-Tier architecture over 2-Tier architecture?
A. In 2-tier architecture we only have the application layer and the data-processing layer.
The application layer is a combination of the GUI front-end and the business logic.
The following are the disadvantages of the 2-tier architecture (which in turn are the advantages of 3-tier over 2-tier ) :
• The application is not easily upgradable.
• The size of the application is large.

3-tier arch. Provides :

• Ease of maintenance.

4. What do normalization and Denormalization mean?
Normalization is the process of simplifying the relationship between data elements in a data structure .

OR
The task of the database designer is to structure the data in a way that eliminates unnecessary duplication and provides a rapid search path to all necessary information. The process of dividing the information into separate tables that meet these goals is called Normalization.

Denormalization is the reverse process of normalization wherein the normalized data is merged to form a larger data structure that might have redundant data.

5. What are the different degrees of normalization?
A. A relation is in 1st Normal form if and only if all underlying domains contain atomic values only.

A relation is in 2nd normal form if and only if it is in 1NF and every nonkey attribute is fully dependent on the primary key.

A relation is in 3rd Normal form if and only if it is in 2NF and every nonkey attribute is nontransitively dependent on the primary key.

A relation R in 4th normal form if and only if , whenever there exists a multi-valued dependency in R, say A ->-> B (attribute B is multi-dependant on attribute A), then all attributes of R are also functionally dependent on A .

A relation R is said to be in fifth normal form also called Projection Join Normal form (PJNF) if and only if every join dependency in R is implied by the candidate keys of R.

6. Do you know ODBC?
A. ODBC is Open-database Connectivity. It provides access to any database which has a
ODBC database driver .
The database can be a client/server database that conform to ODBC standards
eg. SQL Server , Oracle etc.

An ODBC driver-manager provides an interface from the host language to the specific
Back-end data source driver. The driver manager is responsible for :
• Loading the remote database drivers specified in the DSN entry
• Initializing the interface
• Providing entry points to driver entry points
• Validating parameters and managing serialization of ODBC functions

ODBC driver is a DLL that can interface with a specific back-end database engine
Eg. MS-SQL server , Oracle , sybase etc.
An ODBC driver takes advantage of specific back-end features such as cursors or parameterized queries . It can also implement some other features not supported by the back-end. If the driver doesn’t support a specific feature it returns an error stating that it doesn’t support the feature .

7. What are the factors that influence ODBC response time ?
A. The main factors that influence the ODBC response time are :
• Network load
• The complexity of the SQL queries
• The speed of the machine on which the server executes
• The RAM of the machine on which the server executes
• The number of records that are likely to be returned as result of the query.
• The physical location of the database and number of connections to database

8. In how many ways can VB implement ODBC ?
A. VB can implement ODBC in the following ways :
• Using Data control and connecting to a database like SQL Server , Oracle
• Using DAO objects and using the dbUseODBC parameter in the CreateWorkspace methods ie. Using ODBC Direct
• Using Remote Data Control

10. How VB 5.0 implements OOPS ?
A. VB implements OOPS concepts in the following ways :\

11. Explain code-reusability in OOPS programming / VB ?
A. In VB we have the concept of ActiveX code components and ActiveX controls. The code for a
certain functionality need not be re-written if the code components /controls are available to the developer. The references to the code components and controls can be set in VB and the functionality exposed by them can be used in one’s projects. This decreases development time .

12. What is the difference between the following lines of code ?
Dim X as Object
Dim X as class_name

In the first statement the compiler uses Late Binding of the object. The object to be used is not known until run-time. Because the late binding does not use the type library during the design time, a reference is not set to the component.

In the second statement the compiler uses Early Binding. The object variable refers to a discreet object type and hold pointers only to that object type. VB will have explicit knowledge of the object through its type library by setting a reference to the component. With this VB will be able to display data about the available methods and properties, as well as the syntax of the each method or property called.

13. Explain something about Active X and how do you us it?
A. An ActiveX component is a unit of executable such as an exe or dll or ocx file that follows ActiveX specification for providing objects . An ActiveX component exposes objects that can be used by other applications .
ActiveX components used are ActiveX code components, ActiveX documents , ActiveX Controls , ActiveX clients.

14. What is an OLE Server?
A. An OLE server is a code component that exposes some of its methods and properties to
other applications. An OLE Server can be an In-Process server (implemented as an OLE DLL) or an out-of-process server (OLE EXE) .

15. Which is more advantageous – using DLLs or objects ?

16. Do you know about COM / DCOM ?
A. COM is Component Object Model. It is an object-oriented architecture for building applications and the foundation on which ActiveX components are built. ActiveX components allow programmers to combine re-usable pieces of code into applications and services .

It specifies the blue-print of how objects can be created from their component.
How a client accesses features of an object.
Object responsibility to destroy itself when not in use .

Advantages of COM :

A. Microsoft is working on Windows Foundation Classes which proposes to recode the Windows DLLs using Java . Microsoft proposes to enable Java applications to use the WFC and thus bind the Java language to the Windows platforms. This is being strongly contested by Sun .

: COMMON Interview Questions ::
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep your answer short and focused on your professional life. This is not the time to bring up relationships, childhood experiences, family etc. A brief history of education, career and special interests is what is called for here. End it with why you are interested in this particular job.

2. Why are you applying for this particular job?
Show interest and demonstrate that you have researched the job and know what you are getting into. Bring up evidence from past work/ studies that supports your interest in this role and any skills you have acquired in preparation for the role. You can say something like 'I would like to work for a leader in innovative network and telecommunications solutions and my college degree in computational mathematics has given me a solid background for this role. Mention the value-added you can bring to the job.

3. What do you know about our company?
Indicate what you have learnt from your research activities - from their annual reports,
newspapers, word of mouth, other employees etc. Use this to flatter them and show that you have done your homework.

4. What makes you qualified for this particular job?
Again, explain that you are very interested in the job and demonstrate what it is about your past experiences, education and qualifications that makes you ideal for the job. Show enthusiasm and support your answers with evidence wherever you can (e.g. my summer internship at Citibank gave me broad exposure to the area of equity analysis and I think I can apply many of the tools I learnt there in this job). Elaborate on all the past experiences and skill sets that make you suitable for the job. Mention your interests and make sure you bring up all skills/ experience however insignificant that can support your move in this new direction. It is quite common in this day and age to make a career switch. Do NOT use this as an opportunity to badmouth past employers or peers or talk about a failure of any sort. Any of these answers are acceptable: you were looking for a new challenge, your learning curve had flattened out in the previous job and you were looking for a new learning opportunity, the company or department were restructuring, you were ready to start something new after achieving your career goals at the previous company etc.

10. Why do you want to work for us (as opposed to the competitor companies)?
Demonstrate that you know something about the company, that you believe they are leaders/ innovators in what they do, or you think their work culture is exactly what you are looking for, or you like their product(s) or you have friends who work there and have always been attracted to the company etc. Flatter the company and show you know something about it.
11. How long will it take you to start making a meaningful contribution?
Show that you are enthusiastic and willing to learn and will put in all the hours and effort necessary to learn the ropes and start making an immediate contribution. Indicate that your past experiences/ skills/ credentials will enable you to make an immediate contribution at some level while you quickly learn all new aspects of the job. An Interviewer wants someone who is willing and able to learn and will make a return on his investment sooner rather than later.

12. What are your strengths?
See 14 below. In addition, keywords such as good teamplayer, work very well under pressure, very creative, very strong quantitative or computer skills, and very strong client relationship skills may be appropriate depending on your chosen field.

13. What are your weaknesses?
Do NOT mention key weaknesses here. This is not the place to say you are bad at meeting deadlines or you never mastered high school mathematics etc. Turn this question around to your benefit. For example, you are 'overambitious' or 'extremely attentive to detail' or 'like to take on too many projects'. Make it sound positive.

14. What are your career goals?
Show you have thought forward and are committed to your career.

15. How would you describe yourself?
Any of these are good examples of attributes employers are looking for: intelligent, hardworking, quick to learn, enthusiastic, honest, efficient, productive, ambitious, successful, compassionate (in the medical fields).

Do not bring up anything negative here.

17. How would your boss describe you?
They will check references anyways so bring up the most positive attribute you can think of about yourself e.g. hardworking, honest etc. and leave it to your Boss to say anything to the contrary.

18. What did you most like/ dislike about your past job?
Do not use this to badmouth past jobs/ employers. Keep it light and in your favour eg I outgrew the job, there wasn't a clear career progression, I wasn't learning anything new etc. Ideally, you will have loved your last job and would like to achieve the same kind of success and job satisfaction in a more challenging area as you have now 'outgrown' that job and are ready for 'new challenges'.

19. Describe a situation in your past where you showed initiative?
You could describe any new methods you came up with to do your job or to save money for the company or to turn around a bad situation. It can be something as simple as changing a filing system, or establishing a relationship with a vendor that saved your department a lot of money. If you are in sales, you may want to talk about how you brought in that big account. Creatives may talk about how they came up with that cutthroat image or design that brought in the business.

20. What were your main responsibilities in your last job?
Have these ready and list them all. Dwell on the ones that are most relevant to the new job. This answer should be smooth and practiced.

21. What do you consider your greatest accomplishments?
Many of us have one or two milestones in our career that we are very proud of e.g. that early promotion, that 'huge' deal we brought in, the design we came up with, the costs we saved, the revenues we increased, the people we trained, a new invention or process we came up with etc.
Examples of accomplishments may be: 'Reduced costs by X%; or renamed and repositioned a product at the end of its lifecycle, or organized and led a team to do do XYZ, or achieved sales increase of
X% etc. If you are a fresh college graduate, talk about extracurricular activities, leadership roles and grades.

Keep it positive. It's okay to say you were very busy making the most of college and were very involved in sports, activities, social life etc. Employers want human beings not robots. Mention the areas you did very well in even if it was just one or two courses you excelled in. They will check for themselves.

Employers want to see flexibility. Indicate you are willing to put in whatever hours are necessary to finish the job. Do however mention any constraints you have e.g. you would like to be home to pick your kids up from school at 3:30. Most employers are willing to work around your constraints if you show flexibility on your side as well.

YES you do. Questions engage the Interviewer and show your interest. Ask questions that show you know something about the company or the job, that you are planning ahead, that you are anxious and willing to learn the ropes and that you are committed to the position.

Sony’s Latest Wireless Speakers with a 150 Foot Range

I’ll give you some speakers which, thank God, have not been developed with the renowned iPod in mind. This is, as a matter of fact, obvious, as the speakers are signed Sony and the company tried several times to destroy iPod’s supremacy. If you remember, earlier this summer, Sony Electronics gas rolled out a challenger for the iPod Nano and others versions of the Walkman series.

Moreover, this speaker system is compatible with a wide range of devices, really weird for a Sony product, as usually they are well-matched with other previously released Sony branded items and not with the ones of the challengers’. These speakers look nice, but they don’t feature such a great design for a Sony gadget. I would have expected more from them. On the other hand, they offer an enhanced wireless capability which lets you listen to your music within a 150 foot range of the base transmitter for a long time as they come with Ni-MH type rechargeable batteries. The manufacturer didn’t reveal the precise battery life.

Sony’s Wireless RF Speakers come with a low weight of only 146 g (without the transmitter), measuring 234 x 300 x 126 mm (also without the transmitter).

The magnetically shielded Sony Wireless RF Speakers also come with 900MHz wireless speaker system, manual tuning dial for an enhanced reception, two inputs for connecting both PC and portable audio player, one direct analog audio input on main body, a total output power of 2W, and a 57mm neodymiun magnet unit.

Akshardham - The New Monument

After 5 years of non-stop, round-the-clock construction, the massive and awesome Akshardham Temple Monument to World Peace was inaugurated today. The Akshardham Temple in New Delhi, India, constructed by the BAPS foundation -- the builders of the various Swaminaryan Temples across the world, is truely a modern day Wonder of the World. It is one of the biggest and most intricate religious places of worship ever constructed. Combining several completely different and contrasting architectural styles of Hindu temple architecture of northern India -- Rajasthani, Orrisan, Gujarati, Mughal and Jain -- the Akshardham Monument is entirely constructed of marble and the red-sandstone that Delhi is famous for, and that so many of her monuments are constructed of. It was completed in only 5 years a world record of sorts So after years of waiting, the Temple was yesterday opened to the public -- and to photographers. Below is the New Delhi Akshardham Complex as seen through the eyes of a BAPS photographer. The pictures are a great many and will take a long time to load, but totally, totally worth the wait!At its inaguration, it is widely being heralded as one of the greatest monuments India has ever produced. I hope you enjoy viewing this architectual marvel as much as I enjoyed having the honor presenting it.

Monument of Akshardham :

The Akshardham monument, built without steel, is entirely composed of sandstone and marble. It consists of 234 ornately carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, 20 quadrangled shikhars, a spectacular Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants) and 20,000 murtis and statues of India's great sadhus, devotees, acharyas and divine personalities. The monument is a fusion of several architectural styles of pink stone and pure white marble. Pink stone symbolizes bhakti (devotion) in eternal bloom and white marble of absolute purity and eternal peace. The monument was built after over 300 million man hours of services rendered by 11,000 volunteers, sadhus and artisans. It is the one of the wonders of the modern world, and the wonders of modern India.

At CES, Intel demonstrated a proof-of-concept PC, specifically built to counter AMD's 4x4 platform for gamers. Called the 'V8' system, the PC runs on a pair of quad core Kentsfield Xeon processors taking the number of physical cores to eight.

The system runs at 2.4 GHz utilizing 1066 MHz system bus and uses FB-DIMM memory. The graphic support is in the form of a single 8800GTX card. According to Intel, the system gave a score of 6089 on 3DMark CPU bench.

Dual processor systems have not been as popular as they used to be since the advent of dual core systems, besides dual core systems turned out to be more expensive and needed a higher level of expertise. AMD's 4x4 system officially called as the Quad FX can work with regular unbuffered memory as opposed to Intel's V8 that requires FB-DIMMs. Besides the Quad FX can also take dual graphic cards in SLI whereas the V8 currently supports only a single graphics card.
